NTT DATA plans to open an AI Factory Lab in Riyadh in September 2026, giving companies across the Middle East and Africa a hands-on space to test AI systems built on Cisco and NVIDIA infrastructure before committing to a full rollout. The move targets one of enterprise technology's most stubborn problems. Most corporate AI pilots never reach production.

For most of the past two years, the enterprise conversation about artificial intelligence has circled one central question. What are these systems capable of? A harder and more expensive question has been forming beneath it, one that surfaces the moment a promising pilot has to leave the demo behind. Once a system has impressed the board, folding it into the grind of daily operations is where the momentum usually stalls.
The distance between a convincing pilot and a working deployment has become the defining problem of corporate AI, and it is the one NTT DATA is moving to occupy. The company said it intends to open an AI Factory Lab in Riyadh in September 2026, a physical space where organizations across the Middle East and Africa can put AI systems through their paces on production-grade infrastructure before committing budget to a full deployment.
A widely cited 2025 study from MIT's NANDA initiative, "The GenAI Divide: State of AI in Business," found that roughly 95 percent of enterprise generative AI pilots delivered no measurable impact on profit and loss, even as an estimated 30 to 40 billion dollars was poured into them. The researchers traced the failure not to weak models but to a learning gap and the work of wiring AI into real workflows, real data, and real governance. Tellingly, the companies that did succeed tended to lean on outside vendors rather than build everything in-house.
“While interest in AI continues to grow, many organizations are looking for a practical path from experimentation to business outcomes,” said Hani Nofal, Executive Head of Infrastructure Solutions in Middle East and Africa at NTT DATA. “The AI Factory Lab brings together the expertise, technologies and ecosystem partnerships needed to help clients identify the right use cases, deploy AI securely and scale with confidence.”
The lab will host executive briefings, strategy workshops, and hands-on demonstrations across productivity, customer experience, operations, cybersecurity, networking, and software development.
At the center of the lab sits the Cisco Secure AI Factory with NVIDIA, a pre-validated stack meant to let companies build, deploy, secure, govern, and scale AI workloads without assembling the plumbing themselves. Cisco supplies the networking, security, observability, and collaboration layer, while NVIDIA provides the accelerated computing and software behind generative AI, agentic AI, computer vision, and digital twin workloads. NTT DATA is not alone in building a room around it. In June 2026, Equinix and Presidio opened a comparable facility, the P.A.T.H. Lab, on the same foundation, a sign that the validated sandbox is becoming a go-to-market tactic.

The choice of Riyadh reflects how hard Saudi Arabia has worked to make its capital a regional anchor for AI, framing the technology as central to a Vision 2030 drive to diversify beyond oil. The city has become a natural staging ground for vendors selling into the wider region. The wall between pilot and production is not a Gulf phenomenon; American enterprises are hitting the same one, and the partnership-heavy route that separated the winners from the stalled projects is exactly what these labs are built to sell.
A controlled environment lowers the risk of buying AI that dazzles in a pitch and falls apart in the field, and NTT DATA, with more than 30 billion dollars in revenue and clients across three-quarters of the Fortune Global 100, has the reach to make that promise credible. What a lab cannot supply is the work that includes messy data, the entrenched workflows, and the organizational change that ultimately decides whether AI earns it keep all live inside the customer.
The industry has spent two years proving what these systems can do, and comparatively little time proving that companies can absorb them. NTT DATA is opening a room in Riyadh to argue that the second problem is the one that needs solving now, and that a partner can help close the distance between a demo and a working system. It is a persuasive argument and is also one that will be settled far from the lab, months later, in the ordinary operations these systems were always meant to change.
