Dubai's CABSAT and SATExpo are bringing the media and space industries into closer contact as AI, cloud production and satellite connectivity become increasingly relevant to the same businesses.

CABSAT 2026 opened in Dubai on October 5, bringing broadcasters, content companies and media technology providers together at the Dubai Exhibition Centre in Expo City Dubai. The event, which runs through October 7, is holding its 33rd edition alongside the second edition of SATExpo, focused on satellite and space technology.

The two events are expected to draw more than 18,800 visitors to CABSAT and more than 150 exhibitors to SATExpo, with participants coming from international media, broadcast, satellite and technology markets. CABSAT is also making its debut at the Dubai Exhibition Centre as its new home, while SATExpo is being held in strategic partnership with the UAE Space Agency.

The decision to run the events together is timely because the industries they represent are increasingly sharing the same technology requirements. Media companies are adopting cloud production, IP-based broadcasting and AI tools, while satellite operators are expanding into broadband, data and other communications services. A broadcaster looking at remote production or digital distribution is therefore making infrastructure decisions that can involve both terrestrial and satellite connectivity, while satellite companies are targeting customers well beyond traditional television.

AI is one of the strongest themes at CABSAT this year, with discussions covering content monetization, immersive experiences and new production models. Moon Baz of Metaspoke about AI-enabled wearables and their potential to support first-person content and assist creators during filming and editing. The technology is still developing, but its potential impact on production is already becoming part of the industry conversation. Baz said, “AI does not replace the person or the creative spark. AI is here to help get your idea to life.”

CABSAT is also putting attention on the business surrounding content, rather than technology alone. Its Co-Production Salon is connecting creators, producers and investors around financing and international production partnerships, while ContentVerse Director's Cut is examining the commercial impact of AI, changing audience behavior and new storytelling formats. Those discussions reflect a media industry that has to produce for more platforms while dealing with higher expectations around speed, volume and monetization.

Dubai's own production infrastructure is developing alongside those changes. Dubai Studio City, the strategic partner for CABSAT 2026, is showcasing its production facilities and sound stages during the event. The district sits within TECOM Group's wider media operations, alongside Dubai Media City and Dubai Production City, and is part of the city's broader effort to attract production activity and creative businesses to the emirate. Virtual production, LED stages and software-driven workflows are increasing the technical demands placed on studios, making physical production infrastructure an important part of the technology story.

“Innovation is redefining the media, broadcast, and infotainment industry, creating new opportunities for businesses and creative talent across the value chain. Dubai Studio City provides an integrated ecosystem and specialised infrastructure that enable media companies and content creators to innovate, produce and grow, reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global centre for the creative economy. As Strategic Partner of CABSAT 2026, we look forward to exchanging knowledge with industry leaders and fostering collaboration within the media community.” said Majed Al Suwaidi, Senior Vice President of Dubai Media City, Dubai Studio City, Dubai Production City and in5 at TECOM Group

SATExpo shifts the focus from production to the infrastructure that supports connectivity and data. Its summit on October 6 and 7 is centered on “Connectivity, Intelligence and the New Space Economy,” with discussions spanning satellite communications, telecommunications, robotics, regulation and emerging space technologies. The event also includes technology demonstrations, an innovation showcase, startup areas and matchmaking, reflecting the growing commercial focus of the space sector.

The UAE's communications market is also making satellite connectivity more relevant to businesses outside the traditional space industry. Starlink has received a 10-year license to provide satellite internet services in the UAE, adding another connectivity option alongside the country's established fiber and 5G networks. The service could be particularly relevant for businesses operating in locations where terrestrial infrastructure is less practical or where additional connectivity is needed.

For media companies, the connection is straightforward. Live broadcasting, remote production and digital distribution all depend on reliable networks capable of moving large amounts of data, while satellite technology can provide coverage in places where terrestrial networks cannot always deliver the same reach. At the same time, satellite companies are looking for new commercial markets for connectivity and data services. The overlap gives CABSAT and SATExpo a practical reason to share a venue beyond their traditional association with broadcasting and space.

The significance of this year's gathering, then, is not simply the size of either exhibition. It is the fact that media production, content distribution, AI and connectivity are increasingly being treated as parts of the same technology chain. Dubai is building capabilities across several of those areas at once, and CABSAT and SATExpo provide a useful snapshot of how closely those markets are beginning to intersect.
