Stablecoins are moving from crypto markets into the infrastructure of institutional finance. Custody, collateral and treasury integration can provide a way into mainstream finance. This adoption is no longer consumer-led; it relies on regulated institutions using digital dollars as part of their core financial infrastructure. In another step to converge traditional banking with digital assets, Standard Chartered has launched institutional custody of Ripple USD or RLUSD.

This service allows eligible clients to hold RLUSD through Standard Chartered’s regulated digital asset custody program in the Dubai International Financial Center Branch. Standard Chartered is also working with Ripple and LMAX Group on a planned integration that would allow RLUSD to be used as eligible collateral across selected trading and collateral-management products. From Stablecoin to Collateral Asset

Stablecoins have been gaining popularity as a way of moving dollar-denominated value around crypto markets without the reliance of traditional banking. Ripple has been positioning RLUSD as a regulated dollar stablecoin that can be used across payments, treasury management, trading and tokenised markets. Ripple

The Standard Chartered and LMAX agreement provides institutional structure. Under this plan RLUSD held with Standard Chartered would not need to be transferred directly onto the trading venue. Instead, the bank will mirror the value of eligible assets to LMAX Group.

That means an institution could potentially keep RLUSD inside a regulated custody environment while still using its value to support trading activity. The objective is to reduce the operational risk that comes from moving assets between custodians and venues, while also improving counterparty exposure and capital efficiency. A prominent bank like Standard Chartered, which operates some of world’s largest financial markets has been expanding its digital asset capabilities steadily throughout the year, and this highlights the shift in the financial markets. Ripple could integrate RLUSD with many digital asset platforms, and a global bank having custody makes an impact. With the bank’s previous announcements of digital asset custodian in DIFC and Luxembourg add to its strategy. Standard Chartered is not treating digital assets as an isolated product it is trying to build custody, trading and settlement infrastructure across multiple financial centers.

Having RLUSD custody offered through Standard Chartered’s DIFC branch under the supervision of the Dubai Financial Services Authority gives the stablecoin something institutional investors typically require before adoption: a regulated framework around how the asset is held and managed. For banks, funds and other professional investors, that oversight reduces uncertainty around custody standards, governance and operational risk. It also strengthens Dubai’s position as a bridge between digital assets and traditional finance, where stablecoins are no longer just traded as crypto instruments but are being integrated into regulated financial infrastructure.
