The UAE bank is extending direct Bitcoin access to Islamic banking customers, bringing digital assets further into the country's regulated financial system.

For customers using RAKBANK, buying Bitcoin will no longer require leaving their banking app. The bank said on August 24 that RAKBANK Islamic customers can buy, sell and hold Bitcoin through its mobile platform, with transactions funded in UAE dirhams from their current or savings accounts. The service is delivered through Bitpanda's Dubai entity, which is regulated by the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). Customers can access the service without first transferring money to an external crypto exchange, keeping the transaction within their existing banking relationship.
Bitcoin is being introduced inside an Islamic banking proposition, with the bank saying the service is provided in accordance with Shari'ah principles. For customers, the practical change is straightforward; an asset that has traditionally required a separate exchange account can now be accessed through a platform they already use to manage their finances. The service also builds on the bank's earlier move into retail crypto trading and comes as the UAE continues to develop its regulated virtual asset market, giving established financial institutions a route to work with specialist providers.
From crypto exchange to banking service
Dubai's virtual asset market operates under a dedicated regulatory framework overseen by VARA. Its public register lists Bitpanda Broker MENA FZCO as an active virtual asset service provider authorised for broker dealer services. RAKBANK's own crypto service page identifies Bitpanda Broker MENA DMCC as the provider of its crypto services and says the service is regulated by VARA.
At the time, RAKBANK said it had become the first conventional bank in the UAE to offer crypto trading to retail customers through its mobile app, allowing customers to buy, sell and swap cryptocurrencies in AED directly from eligible RAKBANK accounts. The current launch extends that model to Islamic banking customers while continuing to use Bitpanda's platform for the digital asset service.
The use of AED also removes some of the practical steps associated with buying digital assets through an external platform. Customers do not need to transfer funds to another exchange before making a purchase or convert their money into another currency for the transaction. RAKBANK's existing crypto service similarly allows customers to trade directly from eligible AED current or savings accounts through its app.
Vikas Suri, Managing Director, Wholesale Banking Group – Products at RAKBANK, said:
"At Rakbank, our focus is on making innovation accessible in a way that reflects our customers' needs, values and aspirations."
"With this launch, Rakbank Islamic banking customers can access Bitcoin directly through the Rakbank mobile app, funded in UAE dirhams and supported by trusted, regulated infrastructure, while maintaining the Islamic values and principles that guide their financial decisions."
"By combining the convenience of everyday banking with responsible access to virtual assets, we are giving customers greater confidence, clarity and control as they explore this emerging asset class."
The Islamic banking element gives the launch a dimension beyond convenience. Regulation does not change the nature of Bitcoin, and access through a bank does not remove the volatility and other risks associated with digital assets. The difference is the setting in which customers are being offered access: an established banking relationship, a regulated virtual asset provider and an Islamic banking proposition that the bank says follows Shari'ah principles.
The development also reflects how the relationship between banks and crypto providers is changing in the UAE. Rather than building a separate exchange, a bank can bring a specialist provider into its existing digital channels and keep the customer experience within its own platform. Bitpanda has pursued this model with financial institutions in other markets, and its partnership with RAKBANK was announced in 2024 as its first UAE banking partnership for its digital asset infrastructure business.
