When OpenAI opened ChatGPT to advertisers in February 2026, it inherited a problem that every new advertising channel eventually confronts: brands will spend money on a promising new surface, but they will not keep spending blindly for long. AppsFlyer, the measurement and analytics company that calls itself the Modern Marketing Cloud, has closed that gap earlier than most platforms manage to. Its newly announced integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads gives marketers a way to measure app installs, app opens and in-app purchases from their ChatGPT campaigns inside the same dashboard they already use for Meta, TikTok and Google, without adding a new vendor relationship or a single line of code. Grubhub is among more than a dozen advertisers already running campaigns through it.

The timing is the real story here. ChatGPT now draws more than 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million paying subscribers, a scale that puts it firmly in the company of platforms marketers already trust with significant budgets. But trust in an advertising platform is rarely built on scale alone. It comes from being able to verify, independently, that an ad dollar produced a real outcome. By wiring in outside measurement this early, before advertiser habits and platform-reported metrics have had time to calcify into the default, ChatGPT Ads is adopting a discipline that older ad platforms took years, and in some cases regulatory pressure, to embrace.

Why Independent Measurement Matters Now

For marketers, the mechanics are straightforward. Connecting a ChatGPT Ads account to AppsFlyer requires a Pixel ID, an API key and event mapping, a setup AppsFlyer says takes minutes rather than weeks. Once connected, brands can view, attribute and optimize their ChatGPT Ads performance in the same place they manage every other channel. The integration also runs through AppsFlyer's OneLink deep-linking suite, which routes every click from a ChatGPT campaign to the right destination, whether a customer lands on mobile or web, and whether or not the app is already installed.

"As new channels like OpenAI emerge, marketers need to measure them the same way they measure established partners like Meta, TikTok, and Google," said Alexia Nakad, General Manager, EMEA West at AppsFlyer. "Our integration with OpenAI does exactly that, giving marketers the same trusted, unbiased signals from AppsFlyer today to make confident decisions about where to spend."

Grubhub's Case for Measuring the Moment of Discovery

Grubhub has been advertising inside ChatGPT since the platform first opened to marketers, giving its team roughly five months of campaign data before this integration arrived. What the AppsFlyer connection adds is visibility Grubhub did not previously have: app installs, app opens, in-app orders and in-app subscriptions, tracked through the same measurement partner it already relies on across its other paid media.

"We already use AppsFlyer as our mobile measurement partner across other paid media channels, so this integration extends the same trusted measurement capabilities to our ad campaigns in ChatGPT," said Brian Ryu, Vice President of Growth at Grubhub. "Because so much of our customer engagement happens in the app, app attribution gives us a much more complete view of campaign performance, from ad engagement through conversion. That visibility helps us better understand impact and make more informed optimization decisions in real time."

That distinction matters because of how people actually use ChatGPT. AppsFlyer frames it as a place where people go to explore ideas, compare options and make decisions, which means an ad shown there often lands at a genuine moment of intent rather than a passive scroll. Connecting that moment to what happens afterward, an install, an order, a subscription, is the piece that was previously missing for advertisers who depend on their apps for revenue.

A Blueprint for How New AI Platforms Earn Ad Dollars

The bigger implication extends beyond ChatGPT. As agentic and conversational AI products multiply, each one will eventually face the same question OpenAI just answered: how does a brand know its spending is actually working on a platform with no advertising track record to point to? Nakad frames the decision as instructive well beyond this one deal. "OpenAI has built a genuinely impressive advertising programme, and choosing to bring in standardised, neutral third-party measurement this early in its evolution builds trust with advertisers from the outset, and it's a signal other emerging channels facing the same pressure should take note of," she said. "Grubhub and the other advertisers already live on this integration are early proof the model works, and we expect that list to keep growing in the coming months."

AppsFlyer says the integration is live now for all of its customers, with a joint webinar planned alongside OpenAI to walk mutual customers through setup, best practices and early performance insights. The company also intends to keep building out the partnership with OpenAI's team as ChatGPT Ads matures, rather than treating this launch as a finished product.

For an advertising channel barely six months old, that is an unusually fast move toward the kind of accountability marketers have spent a decade demanding from every other platform they use. Mobile app marketing only reached this level of standardized, cross-platform measurement after years of fragmented reporting, and social advertising took even longer to accept outside verification at scale. ChatGPT Ads appears to be compressing that timeline into months.

That compression matters less because it guarantees ChatGPT will become a major performance channel and more because it changes the terms on which that outcome gets decided. Advertisers no longer have to choose between early access to a fast-growing audience and proof of what that access is worth. It suggests the next generation of AI advertising may not have to fight the same trust battles the mobile and social ad industries did. It can simply start with the referee already on the field.
