Pixxel Raises $100 Million, the Largest Space Tech Round in India's History

Bengaluru-based Pixxel has closed a $100 million Series C co-led by Temasek and Seraphim Space, the biggest single funding round ever raised by an Indian space technology company. The deal takes its total backing to $195 million and shows how far India's private space sector has moved since the government opened it to companies in 2020.

The largest cheque ever written for an Indian space company did not go to a rocket builder. It went to a firm that photographs the planet in hundreds of colours the human eye cannot see.

Pixxel started in a hostel room at BITS Pilani by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal, and now run out of Bengaluru, has closed a $100 million Series C round co-led by Singapore's Temasek and the British investor Seraphim Space. It received the largest chieque ever written for an Indian space company that photographs the planet in hundreds of colours the human eye cannot see. New backers 360 ONE Asset and IMM Investment joined existing investors Radical Ventures and growX Ventures. The round pushes Pixxel's total funding to $195 million and stands as the single largest raise by any space technology company in India.

The company builds hyperspectral satellites, which read light across hundreds of narrow bands to reveal things ordinary imagery misses, such as crop stress, methane leaks, and mineral traces. It has six Firefly satellites in orbit, which it calls the highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral constellation flying today, and an Earth intelligence platform named Aurora that turns raw pictures into decisions for governments and industry. Google led a $36 million Series B in 2023 and remains both an investor and a customer, and Pixxel has since partnered with the AI firm Sarvam to build what would be India's first orbital data-centre satellite.

“Years ago, we set out to build a health monitor for the planet. Hyperspectral imaging gave us a fundamentally new way to see Earth. This new investment gives us the scale to turn that vision into planetary infrastructure. More ways of sensing, more intelligence from every image, and more sovereign capability for nations. Our goal is to make a changing planet understandable in time to act,” said Awais Ahmed, Founder and Chief Executive of Pixxel.

The new money is earmarked for hardware and software as Pixxel plans to widen its sensing net with a constellation called Honeybee and a line of high-resolution optical satellites, while building Aurora into a platform that fuses those datasets into decision-ready intelligence for both commercial and sovereign missions. Pixxel is planning to move up the value chain, from selling images to selling the systems and analysis around them, and it is what the Series C is meant to pay for.

A Sector Built on One Policy Change

Until 2020, space in India meant the Indian Space Research Organisation and little else. That year the government let private firms build, launch, and operate, and set up IN-SPACe as a single-window regulator. The count of registered space startups has since climbed past 440, from roughly 50 before the reform, and IN-SPACe expects the domestic space economy to grow from about $8 billion to $44 billion by 2033.

The raise in capital came after India showcased its competence in the space tehc. Skyroot Aerospace put its Vikram-1 rocket into orbit in July 2026, India's first private orbital launch. Agnikul Cosmos flies engines printed as a single piece of metal, Digantara tracks objects in orbit, and GalaxEye is fusing radar and optical sensors on one satellite. In August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sat down with twenty startup founders, Pixxel's among them, to push satellite data deeper into farming and defence.

The Regional Gap is Now Measurable

For the rest of South Asia, the contrast is quite stark. Pakistan's SUPARCO runs on a development budget of roughly $19 million a year, a sum ISRO spends in about four days, and its most capable home-built imaging satellite, PRSC-EO3, only reached orbit in April 2026 with much of its recent progress has come through Chinese cooperation rather than domestic industry. Bangladesh still leans on foreign manufacturers for its satellites, and most of the region's space work sits inside government bodies rather than funded companies.

India loosened its rules, built a regulator, seeded a venture fund, and let private money carry the risk. Countries that keep space sealed inside one state agency are watching a commercial gap widen that grants and diplomacy alone will not close and the figures show the shortfall. India counts more than 440 registered space startups and a $44 billion target for 2033. Pixxel's backing now totals $195 million across four rounds. Compared to SUPARCO's yearly development spend at close to $19 million, the distance between those numbers is the distance between an open market and a closed one.
